Delivering Safer Chemical Storage Solutions for Federation Shire Water Treatment Facilities

MS Constructions delivers complete design and construction of chemical delivery bunds at Mulwala and Howlong Water Treatment Plants

MS Constructions recently completed the design and construction of two purpose-built concrete chemical delivery bunds for Federation Shire, supporting safer chemical handling operations at the Mulwala and Howlong Water Treatment Plants.

Delivered entirely by the MS Constructions team, the project showcased our ability to provide complete end-to-end solutions from initial design and engineering considerations through to construction, finishing works and final site completion.

The new chemical bunds were designed to improve operational safety, enhance environmental protection and provide durable long-term infrastructure for critical water treatment operations.

Site-specific design and construction solutions

Each bund was designed and constructed to meet the individual operational requirements of each facility.

At the Mulwala Water Treatment Plant, MS Constructions designed and constructed a chemical delivery bund to accommodate bulk deliveries of Aluminium Sulphate and Sodium Hypochlorite. The 14-metre-long reinforced concrete structure was engineered to support chemical tanker deliveries, including vehicles with an approximate gross weight of 40 tonnes, providing a safe and reliable unloading area for facility operators.

At the Howlong Water Treatment Plant, MS Constructions delivered a separate chemical bund designed around the facility’s Sodium Hypochlorite delivery process. The 11-metre-long structure provides safe containment and access for IBC deliveries into the site’s 5000-litre storage tank.

Complete project delivery by MS Constructions

The project was managed and delivered by the MS Constructions team from concept through to completion, including:

  • Site assessment and design development

  • Engineering coordination and construction planning

  • Earthworks and foundation preparation

  • Compacted rock base installation

  • Drainage and sump installation for controlled water management

  • Reinforced concrete slab and wall construction

  • Formwork installation and concrete placement

  • Concrete finishing and curing

  • Protective coatings and safety line marking

  • Final clean-up and site reinstatement

By managing all aspects of the project internally, MS Constructions ensured consistent quality control, efficient communication and a seamless delivery process from start to finish.

Safety and quality built into every stage

Working within operational water treatment facilities requires careful planning, coordination, and a strong commitment to safety. The MS Constructions team completed all required site inductions, pre-start requirements and safety processes while maintaining communication with Federation Shire throughout construction.

The completed chemical bunds provide operators with safer working environments while supporting responsible chemical handling and improved spill containment measures.

Built for long-term performance

The successful completion of these chemical delivery bunds demonstrates MS Constructions’ capability in delivering specialised civil construction solutions for essential infrastructure environments.

From design through to construction, every element was completed by the MS Constructions team with a focus on safety, quality workmanship and reliable outcomes.

We are proud to have partnered with Federation Shire to deliver infrastructure that enhances safety and supports the ongoing operation of these important community water treatment facilities.
